What Affects the Price?

• Building height and elevation area.
• Roof structure and anchorage. Where outriggers can go, and what has to be done to let them.

• Rescue provision. Suspended work requires a workable rescue plan, and that is a resourced cost.

• Hire period. Most contractors quote a first period then a weekly or monthly extension rate. Over-runs are where budgets slip.

• Access and transport. Narrow lanes, steep driveways and long carry distances add labour before a single frame goes up.
• Erection and dismantling labour. The largest single line item on most scaffold invoices.
• Ground conditions. Soft ground, sloping sites and paving that cannot take point loads mean sole plates, adjustable base jacks or a designed foundation.

Rigging, Inspection and Rescue

• Outrigger positions, counterweights and anchorage are engineered, not estimated.
• Wire ropes, hoists and secondary fall-arrest devices are inspected before each use and on a defined schedule.
• Operators need specific training for suspended platforms; general scaffold competence is not the same qualification.
• A rescue plan for a stranded or incapacitated operator has to exist and be practicable before work starts.
• Roof-level exclusion and edge protection during rig-up is its own working-at-height problem.

Erection and Dismantling

Rig-up and rig-down are the high-risk phases and both happen at the roof edge. They are planned and supervised as distinct operations. Where suspended access is not viable, the usual alternatives are a designed ground-supported scaffold, a hanging scaffold built off the structure, or rope access.

Choosing a Scaffolding Contractor in Cape Town

• Is the quote for equipment only, or does it include erection, dismantling and transport both ways?
• What hire period does the price cover, and what is the extension rate?
• Who inspects the scaffold during the hire, and how often?
• Does the contractor carry public liability cover, and for how much?
• Is a scaffold design or engineer sign-off needed for this structure, and who pays for it?
