A domestic solar scaffold is one of the smaller scaffold jobs available, usually one or two elevations for a week or less. It is normally a modest line next to the PV system itself, and it is worth checking whether your installer has included it.

What Affects the Price?

• Number of elevations. Access to one roof plane rather than the whole perimeter keeps it cheap.
• Panel handling. A landing platform for a large array adds material.
• Roof fragility. Fragile coverings mean more scaffold, not less.
• Weather delay. Wind postponements extend the hire.
• Height. Every additional lift adds standards, ledgers, braces, boards and guard rails, and above roughly 6 m the tie-in and bracing requirements step up.
• Elevation area. Scaffold is priced on the face area covered in m², not on the floor area of the building.
• Hire period. Most contractors quote a first period then a weekly or monthly extension rate. Over-runs are where budgets slip.

• Access and transport. Narrow lanes, steep driveways and long carry distances add labour before a single frame goes up.
• Erection and dismantling labour. The largest single line item on most scaffold invoices.
• Ground conditions. Soft ground, sloping sites and paving that cannot take point loads mean sole plates, adjustable base jacks or a designed foundation.

Coordinating With the Solar Installer

1. Ask whether scaffold is in the PV quote. Many Cape Town installers exclude it.
2. Confirm which roof planes the array covers, so scaffold is not erected on elevations nobody will use.
3. Book the scaffold for the installation window plus a buffer for wind delays.
4. Where panels are landed on the scaffold, tell the scaffolder, because that changes the loading class.

Choosing a Scaffolding Contractor in Cape Town
