Safe Use: the Rules That Actually Get Broken

1. Castors locked and stabilisers deployed before anyone climbs.
2. Nobody on the tower while it is moved. This is the rule broken most often and the one that causes the most injuries.
3. Climb inside the tower, not up the outside frame.
4. Move only on firm, level ground, and never across a slope or over a cable or hose.
5. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s height-to-base ratio, and use the outriggers supplied rather than judging it.
6. Do not tie a mobile tower to a building and then move it, and do not use it as a support for anything else.
7. Bring it down or move it away from the elevation when a south-easter gets up. A tall tower with a boarded deck catches wind badly.

What Affects the Price?

• Platform height. The main driver on a tower.
• Single or double width. Double-width decks cost more and are steadier.
• Collection or delivery. Collecting it yourself, where the tower fits a bakkie, removes both transport legs.
• Height. Every additional lift adds standards, ledgers, braces, boards and guard rails, and above roughly 6 m the tie-in and bracing requirements step up.
• Elevation area. Scaffold is priced on the face area covered in m², not on the floor area of the building.
• Hire period. Most contractors quote a first period then a weekly or monthly extension rate. Over-runs are where budgets slip.
• Configuration. Straight runs are cheap. Returns, cantilevers, bridging over an entrance and birdcage decks are not.
• Access and transport. Narrow lanes, steep driveways and long carry distances add labour before a single frame goes up.
• Erection and dismantling labour. The largest single line item on most scaffold invoices.
• Ground conditions. Soft ground, sloping sites and paving that cannot take point loads mean sole plates, adjustable base jacks or a designed foundation.

Erection and Dismantling

Towers are usually erected by the user, following the manufacturer instruction manual that must come with the tower. That does not remove the competency requirement on a construction site, where scaffolding work still falls under the appointed competent person. If the manual is missing, do not build the tower.

Choosing a Scaffolding Contractor in Cape Town

• Does the contractor carry public liability cover, and for how much?
• Is a scaffold design or engineer sign-off needed for this structure, and who pays for it?
