It is distinguished from support scaffolding (which holds up formwork and structure) and from suspended access (which hangs from above). Two common arrangements:
- Independent scaffold. Two rows of standards, freestanding but tied to the building for restraint. Used on almost everything, because it does not need the wall to carry any load.
- Putlog scaffold. A single row of standards with the inner end of each transom bearing into the brickwork. Used during bricklaying while the wall goes up.
When Do You Need Access Scaffolding?
- When a trade needs both hands free at height, which a ladder does not allow.
- When work along an elevation is continuous rather than a single point.
- When materials have to be at the work face, not carried up each time.
- When the work will take more than a few hours at height.
- When falling material has to be contained above a pavement, entrance or neighbouring property.
Access Scaffolding for Cape Town Buildings
Restraint is the recurring Cape Town problem. Access scaffolds rely on ties into the facade, and a great deal of Cape Town building stock resists that: heritage properties through the City Bowl and the Southern Suburbs, plastered face brick that will not hold, and modern cladding systems with nothing structural behind them. The alternatives are rakers, buttressing or a wider base, all of which take more material and more ground.
Then there is the wind. On exposed elevations along the Atlantic Seaboard, Blouberg and Table View, tie frequency goes up and requests for sheeting often get refused outright, because a sheeted scaffold in a summer south-easter is a sail bolted to a building.

What Affects the Price?
- Loading class. An access scaffold rated for painters carries less than one rated for masonry, and is priced accordingly.
- Restraint method. Where ties are not possible, rakers and buttressing cost more material and more ground area.
- Height. Every additional lift adds standards, ledgers, braces, boards and guard rails, and above roughly 6 m the tie-in and bracing requirements step up.
- Elevation area. Scaffold is priced on the face area covered in m², not on the floor area of the building.
- Hire period. Most contractors quote a first period then a weekly or monthly extension rate. Over-runs are where budgets slip.
- Configuration. Straight runs are cheap. Returns, cantilevers, bridging over an entrance and birdcage decks are not.
- Access and transport. Narrow lanes, steep driveways and long carry distances add labour before a single frame goes up.
- Erection and dismantling labour. The largest single line item on most scaffold invoices.
- Ground conditions. Soft ground, sloping sites and paving that cannot take point loads mean sole plates, adjustable base jacks or a designed foundation.
Erection and Dismantling

Scaffolding for Hard-to-Reach and Difficult Access
Most enquiries do not start with the word scaffolding. They start with a problem: the painters cannot reach the second floor, the roof has no safe way onto it, or the wall that needs work sits above something nobody wants to stand on.

On any working platform people can fall from, yes, together with toe boards to stop material being kicked off. They should be fitted as the lift is built, not later.
